How long is Italy's digital nomad residence permit valid, and can it be renewed?

The permit marked "nomade digitale - lavoratore da remoto" is issued for up to one year and can be renewed every year as long as the conditions that got it issued still hold. You apply at the local questura within eight working days of entering Italy. It is revoked if you break Italian tax or contribution rules.

From visa to permit

The visa is only the entry step. The 2024 decree says you must request the residence permit directly at the questura of the province where you are, within eight working days of entering Italy. You show the documents you submitted for the visa, stamped by the Italian consulate. The permit is marked “nomade digitale - lavoratore da remoto”.

One year at a time

The law (art. 27(1-sexies) of the Testo unico) caps the permit at one year. The decree adds that it is renewable every year, provided the conditions and requirements that allowed it to be issued are still met.

When it can be lost

The decree says the permit is not issued, or is revoked, if the decree’s requirements or the general entry and stay requirements of arts. 4 and 5 of the Testo unico are missing or lapse. It is also revoked if you don’t comply with Italian tax and social security contribution rules.
