How much income do I need for Portugal's digital nomad visa?

Checked on

Portugal's regulation requires proof that your average monthly income from employment or freelance work over the last three months was at least four times the guaranteed minimum monthly wage. The minimum wage is €920 in 2026, so the threshold works out to €3,680 a month. The same rule applies to the residence visa and the temporary-stay visa.

The rule in the regulation

Portugal’s immigration law (Lei 23/2007) creates the remote work visa; the documents are listed in the implementing regulation, Decreto Regulamentar 84/2007. For both versions of the visa, the residence visa (art. 31-A) and the temporary-stay visa (art. 18-B), the regulation asks for proof of “average monthly income earned in the exercise of employed or self-employed professional activity in the last three months” of at least four guaranteed minimum monthly wages.

The regulation states the threshold as a multiple of the minimum wage, not as a fixed euro amount. The euro figure therefore changes each year when the minimum wage changes.

What that means in euros in 2026

The DGERT, the labour ministry’s directorate-general, says Decreto-Lei n.º 139/2025 set the guaranteed minimum monthly wage at €920 from 1 January 2026. The Foreign Ministry’s visa portal uses the same €920 figure for 2026. Four times €920 is €3,680 a month.

The regulation does not say whether the amount is gross or net.
