How do I renew Spain's digital nomad residence permit?
Checked on
Spain renews the international telework residence permit for two years at a time, as long as the conditions that got you the permit still hold. You apply electronically. Filing extends your permit until the decision, and the law also accepts an application up to 90 days after expiry, though a penalty procedure can then follow.

The timeline
You start either with the international telework visa (up to one year) or with the residence permit (up to three years). If you came on the visa, the law lets you apply for the residence permit in the 60 calendar days before the visa expires, as long as the conditions still hold (Ley 14/2013, art. 74 quater.3). After the residence permit, each renewal is for two years (arts. 74 quinquies.3, 76.3).
Filing on time, or late
The law says filing the renewal extends the validity of your permit until the decision. It gives the same effect to an application filed in the 90 days after the previous permit ended, but adds that this is without prejudice to opening a sanction procedure (art. 76.3).
What “conditions still hold” means
The renewal articles do not list the conditions again; they refer to the conditions that gave you the right to the permit (art. 76.3). For the international telework permit, those are set out in arts. 62.3 (general requirements), 74 bis (remote work for companies outside Spain, qualification or experience) and 74 ter (company activity and the remote-work relationship).
