Can I bring my family on Spain's digital nomad visa?

Checked on

Yes. Under Spanish law your spouse or partner, your minor children, adult children who depend on you financially and have no family of their own, and dependent parents can apply with you or later. Each must meet the general requirements, and you must show more income for each family member.

Who counts as family

The law lists four groups (Ley 14/2013, art. 62.4): your spouse or a person in an equivalent relationship; your minor children; your adult children who depend on you financially and have not started a family of their own; and ascendants (parents) who are in your care.

Applying together or later

Family members can apply jointly and at the same time as you, or later. If they apply at the same time, the law says their visas or permits are decided at the same time as yours (art. 62.4).

What the consulate asks for

The Washington consulate’s guidance asks each family member for their own application form, photo, passport and health insurance, plus the visa fee, and the criminal record documents where they apply. They also need documents proving the relationship. For a partner without a registered partnership, the guidance asks for proof of the relationship lasting at least one year, or, with children in common, the children’s birth certificates and proof of stable cohabitation. Adult children show financial dependence and civil status; parents show they are in your care.
