Where the number comes from
The law itself only says you must have enough money for yourself and your family while you live in Spain (Ley 14/2013, art. 62.3.f). The amount comes from the Foreign Ministry’s consular guidance, which ties it to Spain’s minimum wage (salario mínimo interprofesional, SMI): 200% for the applicant, 75% for the first family member and 25% for each further one. The Washington and Istanbul consulates publish the same percentages.
The 2026 amounts
Real Decreto 126/2026 sets the 2026 minimum wage at €1,221 a month. The Washington consulate’s guidance turns that into €2,442 a month for the applicant, €916 a month for the first family member and €306 a month for each additional family member. The SMI changes every year, so the guidance says the required amount changes with it.
