How much money do I need for Spain's non-lucrative residence permit?

Checked on

Spain's immigration regulation requires 400% of the IPREM a month for the applicant and an extra 100% of the IPREM a month for each dependent family member, held for the whole period of the permit or as regular income. The first permit lasts one year. You also need health insurance; the permit is for living in Spain without working.

What the regulation counts

The non-lucrative permit is for people who live in Spain without work or professional activity (art. 61.1). The regulation sets the money as a percentage of the IPREM (Spain’s public income indicator), not as a fixed euro sum. It says the amounts are minimums.

The total must cover the whole period of the permit you ask for (art. 62.2). Since the first permit lasts one year (art. 61.4), that means twelve months of the monthly amount. The regulation also accepts proof of a regular periodic income instead (art. 62.1).

Foreign bank accounts and company shares

If you show accounts or financial instruments abroad, the regulation says the evidence must include the bank’s full name and address, the full account identification, the opening or closing dates, and the balances at 31 December of the previous year plus the average balance over the last year (art. 62.3).

If your money comes from shares in companies based in Spain, you must prove with a certificate that you do not work in those companies and sign a statement saying so (art. 62.3).

Who counts as family

The spouse, registered partner or stable partner (at least one year of living together, unless you have children together); unmarried minor children; and adult children with a disability who need support or cannot provide for themselves because of their health (art. 61.3).

How you apply

You apply for the residence visa at the Spanish consulate; that application also counts as the application for the permit (art. 63.1). The immigration office checks criminal records and the police report, and must decide within one month of receiving the consulate’s communication. If it doesn’t answer in that time, the law treats the application as refused (art. 63.4). Within one month of entering Spain you must apply in person for the TIE card (art. 63.5).
