What do I need to renew Spain's non-lucrative residence permit?
Checked on
To renew Spain's non-lucrative residence permit, the regulation requires enough means for the renewal period (400% of the IPREM a month plus 100% per dependant), health insurance kept throughout, more than 183 days of real residence in Spain in the calendar year, school-age children in school, and the fee. The renewed permit lasts two years.

The requirements
Spain’s immigration regulation lists six conditions for renewing a non-lucrative residence permit (art. 64.2). The money test is the same as for the first permit: 400% of the IPREM a month for you and 100% a month for each family member you support, measured at the time of renewal (art. 62.1), and covering the whole period you are renewing for (art. 64.2.b).
One condition is about time in Spain: the regulation requires that you have lived in Spain for real and effectively for more than 183 days during the calendar year (art. 64.2.f).
Documents
With the application on the official form, the regulation lists, among others (art. 64.3):
- a copy of your full, valid passport or travel document;
- documents proving your means and your health insurance for the renewal period;
- where relevant, a report from the regional authorities that your school-age children are enrolled.
If schooling isn’t proven, the immigration office tells the education authorities and warns you in writing that without enrolment and the report within one month, the permit won’t be renewed (art. 64.4).
What else the office weighs
The office may look at criminal convictions you have already served (or that were pardoned or suspended), and at any breach of your tax and Social Security obligations during the permit (art. 64.5). It also weighs your integration effort, shown by a favourable report from your region, especially if you don’t meet one of the requirements (art. 64.6).
Related questions
- When to apply: in the two months before the permit expires, or up to three months after, with possible sanction proceedings for the delay (RD 1155/2024, art. 64.1).
- After the renewal is granted, you must apply in person for the new TIE card within one month (art. 64.9).
