My visa-free 90 days in Turkey are ending. Can I still apply for a residence permit?
Checked on
Apply online through e-İkamet before your visa or visa-free period ends. Turkey's regulation still accepts applications from people who have overstayed by up to 10 days. The law orders a deportation decision for anyone who overstays a visa or visa exemption by more than 10 days. First-time applicants who entered visa-free also pay a single-entry visa fee.

Apply before the period ends
The law requires a residence permit from anyone who will stay longer than their visa or visa exemption allows, or longer than 90 days (art. 19(1)). The regulation says applications made inside Turkey must be filed before the legal period ends (art. 21(2)). You apply online through e-İkamet and then attend an appointment at the provincial migration directorate.
The Presidency of Migration Management’s FAQ says that if your visa or permit runs out before your appointment date, the application form lets you stay until the appointment. If you miss the appointment, the application is not processed; if your legal stay has already ended by then, you are treated as having overstayed your visa (first application) or your permit (renewal).
The 10-day margin
The regulation lets the authority accept applications from people who are up to 10 days past their visa, visa exemption or permit, and it may go beyond 10 days when the person’s situation and administrative needs require it (art. 21(2)). The FAQ says online applications made within 10 days after the visa or visa-free period ends are considered.
Past 10 days, the law is strict: a deportation decision is taken against anyone who exceeds a visa or visa exemption by more than 10 days (art. 54(1)(e)).
Penalty fees
The FAQ says an overstay is charged as a penalty fee, which differs by nationality, length of the overstay and age, and that you learn the amount at the border when you leave.
